The following tools and techniques were used in testing web sites for the Illinois Work Incentive Grant Project Accessibility Reviews:
Large Text
Pages were tested for compliance with Internet Explorer 5 & 6 "large text" settings. With Text Size set to Largest, we checked that text on the page actually got larger. Errors were noted if text (including any important text contained in images) did not change size or if changing sizes cause problems with the layout of the page.
To activate Internet Explorer "large text" setting:
- Open Internet Explorer's "View" menu (Alt + V)
- Select "Text Size" (X)
- Select "Largest" (G)
High Contrast
Pages were tested for compliance with Windows XP "high contrast" display settings. With "High Contrast Black" activated, we checked that text on the page responded to the new color settings and that important images remained visible. Errors were noted if text (including any important text contained in images) and backgrounds did not change color .
To activate the shortcut key for Windows "high contrast" settings:
- Open Control Panel
- Open Accessibility Options (A to Accessibility Options, Enter)
- Select the Display tab (Ctrl + Tab, twice)
- Click the Settings button (Alt + S)
- Check Use Shortcut checkbox (Alt + U)
- From the High Contrast Scheme list, select High Contrast Black (Alt + Y, Up or Down Arrows)
- Click OK to close High Contrast Settings (Enter)
- Click OK to close Accessibility Options (Tab to OK, Enter)
Once the shortcut key is activated, turn High Contrast on and off by pressing:
- Left Alt + Left Shift + Print Screen
ZoomText
Pages were tested with ZoomText 8.03 at 2x magnification and 800 x 600 screen resolution. Errors were noted if excess horizontal scrolling was required or if important notifications appeared outside the focused area of the screen.
