Illinois Work Incentive Grant
Assistive Technology Support Site

Site: Federal Employment of People with Disabilities (http://www.opm.gov/disability/)
Reviewed: December 2003

Overview:

The site provides access to information that is relevant to the recruitment, employment, and retention of individuals with disabilities in the Federal Government. Information about Federal and state laws as well as other governmental and non-governmental sites is included. The site provides a simple and straightforward mechanism to help Americans with and without disabilities better understand how to hire and retain persons with disabilities.

Accessibility:

Accessibility on the site is excellent. Very minor issues include the lack of response to large text sizing, and the use of descriptive alternate text for non-essential images (i.e., "horizontal red line"). The alt text should be null for non-essential images to save screen-reader users from having to listen to descriptions of images that do not enhance the functionality of the site. Also, there is form field that lacks a submit button. The absence of the submit button means that screen reader or keyboard users will be taken immediately to the first item on the list, without having the ability to browse and select from it. However, these items are all very minor, and all users of assistive technologies will be able to use the site with little or no problem.
